On Thursday, February 15th the Babylon IDA hosted a panel discussion at Greybarn in Amityville regarding the issue of workforce development in the Town of Babylon as well in the greater Long Island area.
The panel consisted of Joseph DeBello: President of CheckMate Industries, Michael Eichinger: COO of Bay Fastening Systems, Nancy Kelsey: Executive Director at Western Suffolk BOCES/Wilson Tech. and Antonio Martinez: Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor who acted as moderator. The panel discussed the issue from their personal experiences with having trouble finding the skilled labor necessary to fill available positions at their companies as well as the potential to create different remedies to the situation.
Topics ranged from the need to overcome the stigma that working in manufacturing is a suboptimal career, overcoming the significant cost of living in the Long Island area by taking advantage of affordable workforce housing opportunities, and the creation of incentives by companies to retain employment and reduce turnover.
The Babylon IDA has received incredible feedback from this event and looks forward to continuing its efforts in promoting the growth of the Town of Babylon’s business community.
